Art Therapy for Anxious Teens
Life can be hard and overwhelming — especially for teenagers navigating friendship, family, school, and everything in between. Teens face so many complex issues these days, and they often don't have the words to describe what they're feeling, let alone the tools to process it.
That's where art therapy comes in.
Art therapy is a powerful way to support anxious teens because it works non-verbally. Instead of having to find the right words, teens can express what they're feeling through the creative process — and often discover things about themselves that talking alone wouldn't uncover. For teens whose anxiety is showing up as avoidance, school struggles, or social withdrawal, art therapy offers a different kind of entry point.
What an art therapy group for anxious teens looks like
In an art therapy group, sessions typically begin with a mindfulness or relaxation exercise to help participants arrive and settle. From there, the group moves into art-making — drawing, painting, collage, or other media depending on the focus of the session. At the end, the group comes together to reflect on what they made and what came up in the process. There's no artistic skill required. The process is the point.
In a group like this, teens may discover:
Art-making reflects their strengths in ways they didn't expect
Creative expression helps put emotions and difficult experiences into perspective
Making something with their hands can be grounding when everything else feels overwhelming
They're not alone in what they're feeling
