Behind the Scenes: Virtual Music Classes

COVID-19 has changed the way we all do things, and at The Sonatina Center, that means we’re doing virtually everything virtually! We’re doing music enrichment via Google Hangouts Meet, Facebook Live, and the entire team is doing remote teletherapy from our homes. That means our homes are now partially music therapy studios, which can take some finagling!

Behind the scenes, we make sure we have a clean background, adequate lighting and a way to prop up our computers, tablets, or phones for our recordings. At my house, there’s a few spots where I regularly do recordings, so I grab my tripod, clip-on ring light, and try to get it right. And how often does that happen? Well… almost never! I have a habit of going out of frame, knocking over my recording set-up, banging my guitar on the tight spaces I’m in, and of course the endless tech glitches like frozen screens, losing wifi connectivity, and on and on it goes! (Check out our Blooper Reel to laugh along with us)

Without an office, my house has been filled with the things I need to conduct music enrichment and music therapy sessions. At times, it seems like COVID-19 has not only changed the whole world, but has invaded my very home in a unique way, with instruments, books, and visual aides tucked into every bookcase in my house.

Despite that, I have never been more grateful for the gift of music, and especially music therapy! Music has always been a powerful tool, but I’ve been amazed at the way it has soothed us, brightened everyone’s days, and given us a small sense of normalcy and routine during these unprecedented times.

Seeing how you’ve supported us and ALL of our imperfections over the past few weeks has been heartwarming. You’ve welcomed us into your homes in a very special way, and we are SO GRATEFUL to be a part of your COVID survival team!
