Makin’ Lemonade: Music and Art Teletherapy (By: Cacia King)

For those of you who know Team Sonatina, you know that we’re creative and aren’t ones to sit still! When we saw how things were progressing in our community with COVID-19, we immediately sprung into action.

We began to brainstorm: How can we continue to serve our clients while keeping them and ourselves safe and maintain social distance? The answer was clear; We would navigate uncharted territory and begin teletherapy sessions.

I’d like to say that we fearlessly crusaded head-first into teletherapy, but we had so many questions, and lots of learning to do. Would it sound okay? Would this be feasible for our clients and therapists? Would it be anything like an in-person therapy session? How can we maintain client privacy? How in the WORLD is this gonna work??

After a few test runs, we have begun teletherapy sessions with our clients. I’m sure some of you have virtually sat across from us while we problem solve and work out tech problems, or maybe watched our frozen faces, just waiting for the internet connection to work again. We’re all learning new skills and the patience required for navigating teletherapy sessions.

Although we’ve encountered some bumps in the road, we’ve also experienced amazing therapeutic moments through teletherapy sessions. We’ve been able to make music and art, make progress towards client goals, and most importantly, stay connected during these uncertain times.

We will continue to serve our clients through teletherapy and tele-enrichment until it is safe to resume face-to-face sessions. Although we can’t WAIT for that day, we are grateful that teletherapy can keep us connected to our Sonatina community.

If you’re interested in learning about teletherapy at The Sonatina Center, we have put together a handy Teletherapy Guide to answer your questions.
